A LITTLE HISTORY / ABOUT 2 MINUTES
From a big idea to buses, trains and new adventures.
MARTA stands for Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority. That is a long name! Its job is to help people get around the Atlanta area.
In 1965, a Georgia law created MARTA. People were planning a bus and train system for the growing Atlanta area.
In 1972, MARTA bought Atlanta’s main bus system. Before MARTA trains carried riders, MARTA buses were already helping people travel.
Train service began in 1979. The first route connected Avondale and Georgia State. Imagine being one of the first people to ride!
The rail system grew. By 1996, MARTA had completed many projects, including rail service to the airport and farther north.

Now MARTA is preparing a new generation of trains called the CQ400. Some retired cars have even found a new job under the ocean!
